About the Product:
Gallo is a rustic-chic dinner plate handmade by the masterful Martina brothers in their workshop in Apulia, a marvellous area of Southern Italy which faces the Mediterranean Sea.
The posing rampant rooster (gallo) was first popularized as a decorative item by Luigi Motolese, an artist and craftsman from Grottaglie, an Apulian town world-renowned for its ceramics. In the early Twentieth Century, he created this unique design, now an icon of Apulian dinnerware, with bright and cheerful hues of red, blue and yellow.
Gallo is not your ordinary dinner set…. Read this story.
In the popular tradition, a dish with a thread on the rim, filled with pasta and traditional tomato sauce, is placed in front of the groom during the wedding dinner. If the groom emptying the pot saw a rooster painted on the bottom, it was predicted that the couple would have a baby boy, BUT if he discovered decorative birds, it was predicted that they'd have a female child.
The Gallo hand-painted dinner plate is part of a set which includes a soup & pasta bowl and a side plate. Discover the complete Gallo look for your table!
About the Collection:
Antonio and Salvatore Martina handcraft ceramics with a passion inherited from their master craftsman father. In their workshop you can still find antique treadle lathes, which nowadays are almost completely extinct.
Scattered on time-worn wooden tables, there are also a variety of color tubes, which confirm that each object is rigorously crafted and decorated by hand. Around the large oven there are resting dishes, bowls, and vases, just baked and waiting for decoration.
In their small village in Puglia, everyone knows the Martina brothers, and their most noteworthy feature: their hands always spotted with dry clay.
